Dr Abbasi is a psychiatrist and a leader in mental health for minorities and newcomers. She is the founding director of the Annual Muslim Mental Health Conference. In 2024, the sixteenth conference will be held at Stanford University. She is also the managing editor of the Journal of Muslim Mental Health and Director of the Muslim Mental Health Consortium at Michigan State University. Dr. Abbasi has received numerous awards for her community service and mental health promotion.

 

Dr. Abbasi was an honoree of the National Alliance of Mentally Ill, the American Psychiatric Foundation Award for Promoting Minority Mental Health, and the Globie Award winner, Office of International Students Services. She has served on many boards and committees, including the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities American Psychiatric Association. Secretary Becerra recently named her as one of the top 15 women in the nation on the frontlines, celebrating women's faith leaders. She currently chairs the Mental Health Task Force for the Mayor of Lansing, Michigan. She received profile in courage award from APA assembly, Detroit Crains health hero's awards 2024 and elected as the director of American Psychiatric Foundation.
